Juno Award winning jazz ‘cellist Matt Brubeck is celebrated on the Canadian jazz scene. You’ll have to look hard to find a jazz veteran that doesn’t light up at the mention of his name. The bond is one that is shared by jazz architects – the incredibly responsive improvisation that is the hallmark of a musician who can literally compose on the stage.
“You are a fantastic cellist!“ – Yo Yo Ma
Classically trained, with a Master’s in cello performance from Yale, Matt is at ease in multiple genres and has taken his cello improvisation skills into diverse musical territories (not to mention his skill on piano and bass).
The innovative all-star cast brings together some of Canada’s most accomplished jazz musicians (Ted Quinlan on guitar and Ted Warren on drums) to explore the versatility of this instrumentation.
Matt is best known in Canada for his work with pianist David Braid, Stretch Orchestra (with guitarist Kevin
Breit and percussionist Jesse Stewart) and the Ugly Beauties Trio (with pianist Marilyn Lerner and drummer
Nick Fraser).
Brubeck Braid’s CD twotet-deuxtet was nominated for a Juno in 2008 and the eponymous Stretch Orchestra CD just won the 2012 Juno for Instrumental Album of the Year. Matt’s highly eclectic career in the United States has included leading the critically acclaimed Oranj Symphonette, and cello contributions to live performances and recordings by Tom Waits, Sheryl Crow, Dixie Chicks and Yo Yo Ma.
