It is with much sorrow that we report that Kevin Muir, one of Southern Ontario’s top bassists, succumbed to cancer this Sunday, January 27th. Kevin was a much loved and admired player, who supported and inspired so many of us with his encouragement and his skills across a range of genres. A graduate of UWO’s highly respected music program, Kevin built a career playing electric and upright bass with the Stratford Festival Orchestra, the Jeans ‘n’ Classics band and various jazz and pop groups.
Kevin was a devoted husband and father, and we ask that you keep his wife Kelly and 6-year-old son Jake in your thoughts.
Larry Larson, Kevin’s long-time friend and band-mate: “Kevin is the true heart and soul of Larry’s Jazz Guys. Anything we ever did that was remotely interesting was due to his suggestions and encouragement.”
Kevin performed a few times at the Jazz Room, with Larry’s Jazz Guys and most recently in October with the Dave Wiffen Quintet. His playing was always stylish and in the groove, and his solos showcased his deep talent and technical mastery of the instrument, but always with the understatement that was the hallmark of his personality. Our second season opening concert featured Kevin on electric and upright bass, and you can hear a couple of examples of why he was in such demand, at http://thejazzroom.bandcamp.com/.
Please see below for details regarding an informal gathering to remember Kevin, hosted by Kevin’s family.
Our most heartfelt condolences go out to Kevin’s wife and son, Kevin’s friends, the many musicians he worked with, and to everyone else who smiled or got excited upon seeing his name on a show bill. Kevin, you will be missed.
