James Brown (Guitarist, Composer, Educator) is one of Canada’s most talented and versatile musicians. He has appeared and recorded with many leading artists and ensembles and has recorded four critically acclaimed CD’s of original music. His most recent is “Song Within the Story”. Respected tenor saxophonist Mike Murley joined the band on three of the album’s 10 tracks (and performs on this gig)—eight of which are original compositions that document Brown’s ongoing intermarriage of jazz and classical (Stravinsky inspired) music, while two covers explore Canada’s rich folk-rock legacy (Joni Mitchell and Neil Young). “I’m so pleased with how the trio has developed,” the guitarist says. “We’ve been working regularly at
clubs like the Rex Jazz Bar in Toronto for three or four years, and we’ve been playing a lot of the pieces on the CD”.
James has also performed with The Toronto Symphony Orchestra (with Eric Idol), Toronto Philharmonia, Sound Streams Canada (with The Hilliard Ensemble), Art of Time Ensemble and CanStage. He recently performed in the Canadian premiere of 2X5: a new work by New York composer Steve Reich.
