Nicky Schrire is a British-South African vocalist and composer based in Toronto. Her work has seen her likened to vocalists Joni Mitchell and Esperanza Spalding with The Boston Globe’s Jon Garelick noting that “though her approach has earned her comparisons to Gretchen Parlato and Becca Stevens, the similarities are superficial. She’s got her own thing, and it’s very much worth listening to.” Performance highlights include the 2023 Toronto International Jazz Festival, Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York, London’s Royal Festival Hall, and the 2018 Cape Town International Jazz Festival. She has performed and recorded with musicians including Gerald Clayton, Ben Wendel, and Florian Hoefner. Her new album “Nowhere Girl” (Anzic Records) arrives ten years after her last recording and was described by Downbeat Magazine as “razor sharp”. Produced by Oded Lev-Ari, it features Canadian collaborators Ernesto Cervini, Chris Donnelly, and Dan Fortin, with special guests Tara Davidson, Laila Biali, and Julio Sigauque. Schrire is currently on jazz faculty at the University of Toronto, and is the founder of the “Mothers In Jazz” interview series, published weekly by London Jazz News.
