Bernie Carroll has been fascinated by music ever since he discovered drums at 11 years old. In high school he met saxophonist John Tank and they began playing together in local weekend bands. They soon developed a mutual curiosity and interest in learning to understand and play jazz music, becoming lifelong friends in the process. While studying with Toronto Symphony percussionist Ray Reilly, Bernie continued to be very active in the K-W jazz scene, performing with the big bands of Trev Bennett, Harvey Smith and Johnny Kostigan.
He also worked with many smaller jazz ensembles, playing with a virtual Who’s Who of area jazz musicians – Lawrence Crawford, John Tank, Bill Gillard, Peter Rand, George Kadwell, Ted Duff, Fred Boegli, Dave Drew, Ginni Grant, Ron Drake, Al Scott and a host of others. Along with bassist Doug Wicken he joined the Barry Wills Trio which, for two decades performed at many jazz concerts and nightclubs throughout the region and beyond.
More recently, Bernie has played drums in groups led by Paul Mitchell and Andy Klaehn, and he was a founding member of Continuum, an outstanding jazz quintet that included bassist Mark Heine, saxophonist Dave Wiffen, trombonist Ron Schirm and guitarist Dave Thompson.
With the inception of The Bernie Carroll Project, Bernie continues to explore new pathways through the vast and ever-changing landscape of jazz music. The quintet, a reunion of familiar faces, performs a spectrum of well known jazz standards along with a smattering of original tunes penned by band members.
